The Benefit of Video Conferencing Software in the Classroom

Everything You Need to Know About Video Conferencing

Doing business today means communicating internationally or remotely. From organizing meetings with your colleagues in a city 50 kilometers away to closing an overseas deal, seamless communication is key. Or what about talking to that one friend you met in Italy last summer? Although telephoning can help you out, it lacks the personal touch meetings so often need – 70% of all human communication is visual!

This is where video conferencing comes into play. Thanks to better internet and technological improvements, video conferencing has taken full shape. It has become an essential need for any business, whatever its size. Schools are also adopting this new technology, and with good reason.

Youngsters today rarely chat or write anymore, they video chat. It is important for teachers and schools to be up-to-date with the latest technologies so they understand and connect with their students. We will explain video conferencing to you and give a few significant advantages of the software.

What is video conferencing?

Video conferencing means conducting a conference (meeting) with two or more participants who are at different locations by using the Internet to transmit audio and video data. This means you can have a face-to-face meeting without moving to the same physical location.

This is often used to hold routine meetings, negotiate business deals, interview job candidates, work from home or facilitate training or education. Students who are unable to attend classes physically (E.g. when they’re sick or social distancing) often use video conferencing technology to follow classes, so they don’t fall behind. An example of this is Bednet. They also review classes before an exam to help them pass the subject.

What are the main advantages of video conferencing?

There are several significant advantages to video conferencing. An important one is cost reduction. There’s a lower cost on travel and staff training since you don’t have to physically move. You can also share documents online instead of printing everything out.

The second big advantage is time-saving. The meetings and training don’t take as long because of the improved, easier communication between participants. You don’t have to travel so you save a lot of time, especially if the traffic is terrible!

On top of that, you can even record your conferences or classes so students who are sick can follow from home or even from the hospital. Teachers and students can also review the classes at a later moment, or share it with others.

Another great advantage is the possibility to schedule parents/teachers meetings online. All parents want to know how their kids are doing in school. If for some reason, they are unable to physically come to school, teachers can always use video conferencing to share their thoughts and feedback.

Students who have used video conferencing technology in school have an advantage when they start their professional life. They will need to use the same tools in their careers, without a doubt. Although they are familiar with Facetime, professional tools like Zoom differ slightly from the tools they use in their spare time. It’s crucial for schools to introduce them to this great technology so they can participate in today’s global society.

There are many advantages of video conferencing in the classroom that can’t be ignored. However, the lack of personal interaction, limited participants and technical issues can be real challenges. The right use of this technology requires careful planning and consideration, but it can be a convenient way to connect teachers, students, and parents.

Main advantages of video conferencing in the classroom:

  • Reduce costs
  • Save time
  • Ensure that every student can follow lessons
  • Easier communication between students, parents, and teachers
  • Good preparation for the professional life
