She is teaching English and Life Skills in SIS Cilegon.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Educating the <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mind<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without educating the <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><\/i><b><i>NO<\/i><\/b> <b><i>education<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at all&#8221; &#8211; <\/span><\/i><b><i>Aristotle<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">In this time of COVID-19 pandemic, people are going through a lot of drastic changes while facing difficulties and fears in their daily existence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Our graduation theme on resilience is aptly opportune because children should be able to cope up or recover quickly from difficult situations like what they are actually experiencing these days. In these changing times, we should put more value on the soft skills of our children as this will help them succeed in their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we say that someone is clever but made a mess of their personal lives; someone who has acquired a fortune but is restless and sad, or powerful but intolerant and unimaginative, these are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deficits in what we call <\/span><\/i><b><i>Emotional Intelligence<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7785 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sisschools.org\/sis-cilegon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/06\/SIS-Cilegon-EQ-Blog.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sisschools.org\/sis-cilegon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/06\/SIS-Cilegon-EQ-Blog.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/sisschools.org\/sis-cilegon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/06\/SIS-Cilegon-EQ-Blog-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sisschools.org\/sis-cilegon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/06\/SIS-Cilegon-EQ-Blog-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sisschools.org\/sis-cilegon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/06\/SIS-Cilegon-EQ-Blog-600x399.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional Intelligence is defined to be of four proposed abilities: <\/span><b><i>perceiving<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><i>using<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><i>understanding<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><i>managing<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emotions. And has five key elements which are <\/span><b><i>self-awareness<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (children know what they feel and why), <\/span><b><i>self-regulation<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (staying in control of one\u2019s emotion), <\/span><b><i>motivation<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (working towards one\u2019s goals), <\/span><b><i>empathy<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(comfortable to walk in someone else\u2019s shoes) and <\/span><b><i>social skills<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (children can become great communicators).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits of having high EQ is that it helps your child to communicate better, reduce anxiety and stress, defuse conflicts, improve relationships, empathize with others,\u00a0 effectively overcome life\u2019s challenges and, I suppose your ultimate goal is, for them to become successful adults.\u00a0 Also, with high EQ, children would know their strengths and how to use them to their full advantage.\u00a0 <\/span><b><i>Now, wouldn\u2019t you want your child to have high EQ over high IQ?<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Here are tips on how to Raise an Emotionally Intelligent Child*<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u00a01. <\/strong><b>Label your child\u2019s emotion\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">You should put name to your child\u2019s emotion, for example, \u201cIt looks like you feel really angry right now.\u00a0 Is that right?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>2. Show empathy<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Let the child know you understand how your child feels, for example, \u201cI also feel upset when I don\u2019t get to do what I want too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>3. Model Appropriate Ways to Express Feelings<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Use feeling words your everyday\u00a0 conversation and practice talking about them, for example, \u201cI feel angry when I see kids being mean on the playground.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a04.<\/strong> <\/span>Teach Healthy Coping Skills<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Help them know how to calm themselves down, cheer themselves up or face their fears. You can do this by teaching them specific skills like taking deep breaths, by telling your child to take \u201cbubble breaths\u201d, where the child breathes through the nose and blows out through the mouth as if blowing through a bubble wand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>5. Develop Problem \u2013 Solving Skills<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Help your child at least identify 5 ways how he\/she might solve the problem. Then encourage your child to pick the best option.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>6. Make Emotional Intelligence an Ongoing Goal<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">There is always room for improvement.\u00a0 Use your child\u2019s mistakes as opportunities to grow better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, as Aristotle put it\u2026<\/span> <b><i>\u201c<\/i><\/b><b><i>educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all<\/i><\/b><b><i>\u201d<\/i><\/b> <b>thereby the significance of emotional intelligence is as relevant then as it is now. And on these notes, it is really crucial that we hone the emotional intelligence of children, in the same manner, we try to harness their academic skills.
