From completing postponed semester assessments to introducing Student Led Conferences, our school community has demonstrated resilience, responsibility, and academic growth.

Semester Assessments Completed

Assessments provide a valuable snapshot of student learning at a specific point in time. They help students, parents, and teachers identify learning gaps, recognize progress, and determine where additional support may be needed.

Due to flooding, Semester One assessments were postponed and completed once school reopened in January. Students were reminded that they would need to recall Semester One content while also engaging with new Semester Two material. The majority of students managed this challenge very well, demonstrating strong work habits and resilience. We are proud of their efforts.

Grade Level Assessments and Academic Benchmarking

This month, Primary 5 and Secondary 2 students completed Grade Level Assessments in English, Mathematics, and Science with Mr. Jayson.

Grade Level Progress Tests, including PTE, PTM, and PTS, are benchmarking assessments aligned with UK adjacent international standards. These assessments measure student performance against a broader cohort, not only within their class or school.

The results help teachers identify areas that may need targeted support while also highlighting strengths and academic progress worth celebrating. These assessments play an important role in maintaining accountability and continuous improvement for students, teachers, and the school.

Student Led Conferences and Parent Teacher Collaboration

SIS Medan has a long standing tradition of holding Parent Teacher Conferences at the end of each term. These conferences allow teachers and parents to share valuable insights into a student’s academic progress, learning habits, and social development. However, this format does not always give students the opportunity to reflect on their learning or actively participate in the conversation.

This semester, SIS Medan proudly introduced Student Led Conferences in Lower Primary and Junior College classes. Preschool, Upper Primary, and Secondary classes will begin Student Led Conferences in Semester Two.

Through this approach, students are encouraged to reflect on their learning, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and set personal goals for the upcoming semester. Parents, grandparents, siblings, and family members were invited to hear directly from students about their learning journey.

Student Reflections on Student Led Conferences

Briella Zane Wijaya from Primary 1 Courage and Audrey Jovianne Lim from Primary 2 Persevere shared their experiences.

What did you like about the Student Led Conference?

Briella shared that she enjoyed showing her English and Mathematics work to her parents.

Audrey shared that she liked telling her mother about what she does at school.

What did you learn from preparing your portfolio?

Briella learned to check her work before placing it in her portfolio.

Audrey learned to keep her work neat and organized and to be confident when speaking, even when feeling nervous.

Why is the Student Led Conference important?

Both students shared that it helps them feel confident, talk about their learning, and take responsibility for their work.

Student and Family Perspectives from Junior College

Siti Sofia Lanniari, a Junior College 2 student, shared her perspective on the Student Led Conference experience.

She explained that Student Led Conferences are more meaningful than traditional Parent Teacher Conferences because students take initiative and lead the conversation about their learning. This process encourages reflection and helps students understand their own progress rather than simply hearing feedback from teachers.

Through this experience, she learned the importance of stepping outside her comfort zone and trying new approaches to improve her learning.

Soraya, Sofia’s older sister and guardian, shared that Student Led Conferences provide a more complete and honest picture of a student’s learning journey. Hearing directly from the student creates a more dynamic and engaging conversation, allowing families to better understand challenges, strengths, and how to support learning at home.

Building Confidence Through Student Voice

Student Led Conferences reflect SIS Medan’s commitment to developing confident, reflective learners who take ownership of their education.
