This means getting them into the right universities. But more importantly it\u2019s about helping them get jobs in which they will thrive. While a consensus is forming that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sisschools.org\/blog\/2018\/12\/balancing-old-and-new-ideas-on-education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building resilience, character<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sisschools.org\/blog\/2019\/01\/stem-steam-stream-or-scream-integrated-learning-as-a-way-forward-for-indonesia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STEM skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a clear path forward for prescribed educational journeys, we cannot ignore the demands of the job market. In a digital world, Indonesia with its enormous population of digital natives is well placed to play a critical role in the future of the region and indeed the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Digital natives do not \u201cgo online\u201d &#8211; they \u201clive online\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asia\u2019s rapid economic development means it will soon account for two-thirds of the global middle class by 2030. Indonesia\u2019s own middle class is expected to double from 74 million in 2017 to 141 million by the year 2020. With a median age of 28-years and more than half the population under 30, Indonesia has a unique opportunity because this massively upwardly mobile group are digital natives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Digital natives do not \u201cgo online\u201d &#8211; they \u201clive online\u201d. They grew up with the Internet and platforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9559 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sisschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/SIS-Student-Programming.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"530\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an extremely active technology start-up scene, much has been made recently of the \u201cunicorns\u201d to have come out of Indonesia such as <\/span><strong>Bukalapak<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><strong>Traveloka<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><strong>Tokopedia<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><strong>GoJek<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s no accident that a tech-savvy middle-class is driving the region\u2019s fastest growing travel, online-shopping and ride-hailing applications. And with 72% of Indonesians using smartphones to access the Internet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>2<\/sup> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this is very much a mobile internet story, with Indonesia potentially a digital hub for mobile app creation and deployment around the region. So what types of jobs does Indonesia need to achieve its lofty goal?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to LinkedIn, the jobs with the fastest-growing demand in Indonesia for the period (2013 &#8211; 2017) were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Back End Developer<\/li>\n<li>Data Scientist<\/li>\n<li>Android Developer<\/li>\n<li>Full Stack Engineer<\/li>\n<li>Front End Developer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each of these jobs requires a mix of technical skills that often fall outside of the curriculum of formal education. Skills in cyber security, Java, MySQL, PHP, HTML and mobile application development are in ever-increasing demand throughout the entire region. This means Indonesian firms must also pay higher salaries for employees with these skills or face cherry-picking from regional competitors. What\u2019s more, these skills aren\u2019t simply acquired once and then cataloged, they require a commitment to ongoing skills development and a \u201clifestyle of learning\u201d where unlearning redundant or outdated platforms and skills is just as important as learning new coding languages.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is Millennials are well aware that they need to continually develop their skills, especially around technical, interpersonal and IT skills<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Therefore, it is up to educational institutions, public private partnerships and industry to <a href=\"https:\/\/sisschools.org\/blog\/2019\/02\/how-colleges-universities-can-collaborate-with-schools\/\">form more efficient linkages<\/a> in order to make relevant training available. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the right head start in school and clear opportunities for skills development, the future of Indonesia is indeed bright, young and digital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balmaceda, Sofia.
