It is about understanding the emotional rhythm of a classroom, recognising when students are ready to absorb complex ideas, and knowing when they need to experience learning in a different way. For me, empathy is not an addition to teaching, but it is the foundation.

Chemistry is often perceived as abstract and challenging. Equations, symbolic representations, and analytical problem-solving can easily distance students from the true essence of the subject. Over time, I began to notice that what students struggled with was not only the complexity of the content, but the lack of connection to real life. That realisation reshaped my approach.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1779091721831{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-left: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Empathy in Action: Designing Meaningful Chemistry Learning

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1779091864577{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-left: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”9089″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_3d”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1779091721831{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-left: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

In my classroom, empathy means more than understanding students emotionally, it also means understanding how and when they learn best. For this reason, I structure my lessons each week to balance conceptual understanding with meaningful learning experiences.

During morning sessions, when students tend to be more focused, I emphasise explaining key concepts and guiding them through analytical worksheets that strengthen their understanding. In afternoon classes, when energy levels naturally decline, I begin with short interactive games related to the lesson. These activities help refresh their focus before we move into deeper discussion.

Beyond classroom instruction, meaningful interactions with students are equally important. I provide consultation opportunities before assessments and reflective discussions after practical work. When students struggle, we analyse their thinking process rather than simply correcting answers. This helps students develop confidence and a deeper understanding of chemistry.

Each week also includes one special session called Fun Chemistry Practical, a one-period activity where students explore chemistry through simple experiments that connect directly to everyday life. Through this approach, students not only learn the theory but also experience how chemistry works in the real world.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1779091721831{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-left: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Fun Chemistry Practical: Turning Theory into Reality

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1779091864577{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-left: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”9097″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_3d”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1779091721831{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-left: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

During these sessions, students create real products through simple experiments. By making items such as soap bars, perfumes, and biodegradable plastic, they discover that chemistry exists all around them. These hands-on activities make chemical concepts more tangible and demonstrate how scientific knowledge can be applied in everyday life.

Beyond product creation, students also conduct visually engaging experiments. Using turmeric as a natural acid–base indicator, they observe striking color changes that make chemical properties visible. In another activity, they reveal hidden fingerprints using iodine, discovering how chemistry is used in forensic science. As the colors change and fingerprints slowly appear, excitement fills the room, and it is not uncommon to hear students exclaim, “Wow… Chemistry is magic!” Moments like these help students realize that chemistry is not just a concept in textbooks, but something that exists in real life.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1779091721831{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-left: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Strategies to Help Students Excel

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1779091864577{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-left: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”9105″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_3d”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1779091721831{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-left: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

To support students in reaching their full potential, I intentionally design learning experiences that encourage both understanding and confidence in chemistry.
