Harmonizing National Pride and Organizational Ethos on Singapore’s National Day

Written by Jaspal Sidhu
SIS Group of Schools, Founder and Chairman

Jaspal Sidhu

As Singapore marks its 58th Birthday on August 9th, 2023, the SIS Group of Schools achieves a notable milestone, reaching 25 years of existence. Woven into this journey is my own identity as a Singaporean, with a strong desire for adventure and a commitment to levelling the playing field for those facing life’s challenges.

Today, I reflect on the core national values that have inspired SIS’s organizational principles of fairness, respect, integrity, compassion, and courage. These values, vital for both our institution and our nation, foster harmony and strength on different scales.

SIS National Pride 2

Fairness, a cornerstone of effective organizational management, is seamlessly interwoven with Singapore’s dedication to forging an equitable society. Just as prosperous organizations prioritize equitable treatment to nurture a motivated workforce, Singapore’s governance aims to level the playing field for its citizens. This resolve echoes throughout society, with the Housing Development Board (HDB) offering affordable housing for diverse backgrounds, emancipating families from the shackles of unaffordable dwellings.

In education, Singapore’s fairness is resolute, guaranteeing quality learning for all, transcending ethnic origins. Globally recognized, its education system’s prowess is evident through its high OECD’s PISA rankings. Scholarships and grants, disbursed based on merit, not ethnicity. Equitable employment acts, irrespective of race, religion, or nationality, echo this fairness ethos within organizations.

SIS too embraces fairness, priding itself on equitable hiring and promotions. Our global school network fosters abundant growth prospects. Merit-based promotions, driven by 360-degree feedback and competence, flourish. Our relentless efforts foster an environment where employees value their contributions’ impact in shaping a better future.

Respect is intricately woven into Singapore’s dedication to honoring its rich multi-ethnic heritage. The nation thrives on its vibrant multiculturalism, exemplified through festive celebrations like Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Hari Raya, and Christmas. These observances radiate respect for the diverse ethnic and religious tapestry that coexists harmoniously. “Racial Harmony Day” in schools nurtures mutual understanding and acceptance, fostering a culture of appreciation for various cultures.

Within SIS, respect is palpable as we champion diversity and inclusion. Our stakeholder reports encompass ESG and DEI advancements within SIS. Our workforce comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds, and our management team is a testament to non-dominance of any singular ethnic group. Transparent surveys affirm our employees’ sense of value and inclusion. During a retreat in Bali this year, I witnessed the team’s happiness index levels soar to almost 98%. When our educators and management feel respected, their diverse viewpoints contribute to enhanced problem-solving and innovative solutions. Ultimately, our students reap the benefits. This is evident in this year’s historically high enrolment figures, a testament to the communities’ trust in our brand.

Integrity resounds in Singapore’s unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability, serving as a beacon against corruption. The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) stands as a sentinel, actively investigating and thwarting corrupt practices, safeguarding the integrity of public institutions and the efficient utilization of public funds for the nation’s advancement.

Similarly, within SIS, integrity thrives as a steadfast dedication to unwavering ethical conduct, reliable financial reporting, and principled interactions with stakeholders. Our valued partnership with the IFC (World Bank) and engagement with impact funds not only reinforces our reputation but instils trust among stakeholders. Our open communication channels and robust whistle-blowing policies play an indispensable role in upholding the organization’s integrity, fostering an environment where accountability and trust flourish.

Compassion echoes within Singapore’s robust social support systems, exemplified through diverse assistance programs catering to vulnerable segments of society. Initiatives such as the Silver Support Scheme underscore the nation’s dedication to ensuring the elderly lead their later years with dignity and stability.

Likewise, in SIS, compassion is embodied through employee well-being initiatives, bolstered mental health support, and endeavors promoting work-life equilibrium. It is also evident in our scholarships aimed at aiding those overcoming adversities. Amidst the challenges of COVID-19, our care extended to comprehensive employee support, encompassing provisions like free Sportify and Netflix subscriptions to those who were confined away from their families. Today, a policy stands that if a family’s primary provider passes away, their child is relieved of tuition fees until graduation, showcasing our commitment to compassion.

Courage, a hallmark of audacious leadership choices, stands as a linchpin in Singapore’s drive towards cohesion amid global and regional trials. Despite its small stature, Singapore’s foreign policies resound with boldness, bravely advocating its position. During the pandemic, Singapore’s initiatives were exemplary. The choice to embrace English while preserving ethnic languages showcases courageous decision-making, bolstering national identity while nurturing cultural diversity.

Within SIS, courage takes form in leaders who challenge norms, fostering innovation. As our students face a challenging, unfamiliar world, a diverse skill set becomes crucial. Beyond academics, our emphasis on Sports and Creative Arts harmonizes with our Desired Student Learning Outcomes (DSLOs), encapsulated by PACE: Perseverance, Analytical Thinking, Collaboration/Communication, and Entrepreneurship/Innovation. This courage-driven approach prepares students for the dynamic modern landscape.

Indeed, Fairness, Respect, Integrity, Compassion, and Courage form the bedrock for organizational success and diverse nation governance, exemplified by Singapore.

SIS continues to impact communities where we establish our campuses through quality, affordable education across our global network spanning Indonesia, India, Myanmar and beyond. Our students excel, gaining admissions to renowned global universities. We’ve earned international recognition, including one in 2019 from the Financial Times (UK)-IFC (World Bank) for the transformational work we do in education. Capital Finance (UK) crowned us the top SE Asia education institution in 2021 for impact. Nominations for the Steward Leadership award from INSEAD and the Hoffman Institute highlight our continuous commitment.

As for me, I find myself wishing I were 40. Each day, the inspiration I receive from my family and friends here and beyond our borders fuels my drive to forge accessible and enduring education. My path persists, descending further down the SIS tuition fee pyramid, introducing our newest venture, Inspirasi (Inspiration in Javanese). But that is a story for another day.

Happy 58th Birthday Singapore!
