Beyond Borders: Raffles Institution Students Complete 16-Day Exchange with SIS Group of Schools in Jakarta

SIS Group of Schools recently welcomed 30 students from Singapore’s Raffles Institution (RI) for a 16-day immersive exchange program at SIS Kelapa Gading North East Jakarta.
The program, titled Beyond Borders: Immersing Rafflesians in Indonesia for Global Leadership, brought together young minds from both nations to learn, collaborate, and grow through a journey that blended classroom experiences with real-world exploration.
Building Connections Beyond Classrooms
From the start, Beyond Borders was designed to be more than a traditional student exchange. Over two weeks, RI students lived and learned alongside SIS students, diving into Indonesia’s culture, history, politics, and society. They participated in hands-on workshops, cultural tours, and collaborative projects that challenged them to see the world differently and to reflect on what unites and distinguishes their countries.
By comparing life as a Singaporean and as an Indonesian, students built empathy, developed cross-cultural understanding, and gained new perspectives on leadership in an interconnected world.
A Partnership with Purpose
The exchange program stemmed from a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed earlier this year between Mr. Jaspal Sidhu, Founder and Chairman of SIS Group of Schools, and Mr. Aaron Loh, Principal of RI. The agreement laid the foundation for ongoing exchanges, signaling a long-term partnership between two leading education institutions in the region.
Mr. Jaspal Sidhu shared:
“This partnership embodies our vision of nurturing globally-minded leaders. By immersing students in each other’s cultures, we aim to cultivate understanding, empathy, and collaboration that transcends borders.”
Mr. Aaron Loh echoed this vision, adding:
“Beyond Borders represents more than an exchange program. It is a deeply immersive regional experience — an opportunity for our students to gain firsthand perspectives on diverse cultures, allowing us to nurture students who are culturally sensitive and globally aware.”
What Students Gained
Through the program, students engaged in a structured learning flow that deepened their understanding and broadened their perspectives:
- History & Culture: They explored themes of diversity, nation-building, and nationalism, learning to build empathy from human to human.
- Social & Environmental Issues: They examined healthcare, education, sustainability, and infrastructure, defining real-world problems and empathy from human to human and nature.
- Economic Development: They explored social entrepreneurship and food security, moving from empathy to ideation, connecting humans to society.
- Politics & Cooperation: They studied regional cooperation and political dynamics, practicing iteration and applying insights to society-level challenges.
By the end of the program, students were able to:
- Understand Indonesian perspectives across culture, history, politics, and daily life.
- Reflect and compare life as an Indonesian versus a Singaporean, strengthening empathy and cross-cultural connections.
- Identify opportunities for cooperation and design meaningful projects or initiatives that can benefit both nations.
Key Program Objectives Activated
The immersion program was built around seven core objectives:
- Foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives.
- Develop resilience and adaptability by stepping out of comfort zones.
- Explore Indonesia’s cultural heritage, natural beauty, and ecosystems.
- Tackle real-world challenges through hands-on experiences and problem-solving.
- Ignite curiosity and collaboration via teamwork and shared projects.
- Prepare for global complexity by equipping students with skills and knowledge for interconnected challenges.
- Build lasting friendships and meaningful connections that transcend borders.
Daily learning combined novelty, challenge, and collaboration, making the experience both transformative and impactful.
Why Beyond Borders Matters
- See the World Differently: Students gained firsthand insight into Indonesia’s culture, history, and society.
- Build Empathy: Shared experiences fostered compassion and understanding between Singaporean and Indonesian students.
- Create Impact: Collaborative initiatives helped strengthen bonds and lay the groundwork for future cooperation.
The program was guided by six RI staff members and supported by Generasi Edukator Indonesia (GenEd), whose Learning & Experience team ensured the activities were seamless, meaningful, and transformative.
Looking Ahead
The Beyond Borders program is just the beginning. As SIS Group of Schools and Raffles Institution continue this collaboration, both institutions are setting a new benchmark for student exchange programs in Southeast Asia, one that emphasizes empathy, leadership, and real-world impact.
