Combining Active Learning with Global Awareness
Written by Kavita Jaisi

Since embracing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) in 2020, SIS has achieved many meaningful milestones in running, reporting and enhancing this initiative. This year, SIS partnered with the Green Guardians to run its environmental and climate literacy program.

The Green Guardians is a solution-based, transdisciplinary curriculum that highlights environmental issues. It is currently adopted in schools in California.
Mahboob Mahmood, Founder & CEO of Green Guardians says about the shared vision with SIS, “Environmental literacy, which aspires to redefine the relationship between humans and nature, is about learning and doing, about advancing knowledge and changing behaviours. Green Guardians is thrilled to partner with SIS, with its philosophy of green, values-and-impact-based education. The magnitude of this impact is huge with SIS being the largest school group in Indonesia, the 4th most populous country in the world.”

Yvonne Qiu, the Director of Instruction Design at Green Guardians states “Just like literacy equips us to apply knowledge and skills in meeting real-life challenges, environmental literacy empowers us to apply the knowledge of the complex dynamics and relationships that sustain life on Earth. We are excited to embark on this journey with SIS to help students become stewards of our planet and take action to improve the well-being of other individuals, societies, and the global environment.”
Kavita Jaisi concurs. “We need our children to see that they can be part of a solution to complex global issues. Green Guardians does a great job of scaffolding complex concepts for young learners. When learners think about finding solutions and reflecting on their effectiveness, that is active learning personified. We look forward to a future collaboration with schools in California.”
