SIS x YPKBI: Expanding Access to Quality Education in Indonesia

teacher internship program

SIS Group of Schools is proud to partner with Yayasan Pendidikan Kader Bangsa Indonesia (YPKBI) to provide teacher internship opportunities at SIS South Jakarta. This initiative aligns with our commitment to prepare future-ready educators by combining theory with hands-on classroom practice. Through YPKBI, which also collaborates with the International Baccalaureate (IB), this program is closely aligned with the SIS curriculum and values.

Bridging the Educator Gap

Across Asia, the demand for IB- and Cambridge-trained educators is outpacing supply. According to ISC Research (2024), international school enrolments are growing at 6.3% annually, while the growth of qualified teachers lags behind at less than 2%.

The SIS Internship Programme directly addresses this gap, equipping aspiring educators with real, structured classroom experience in high-performance IB and Cambridge environments.

Why Internships Beat Theory-Only Training

Great teachers aren’t born, they’re developed. Research shows that teachers who undergo structured school-based practicums are 2.5 times more likely to demonstrate effective classroom practice within their first three years.

Our internship bridges the theory-practice divide through:

  • Structured classroom immersion
  • Weekly goal setting and feedback
  • Progression from observation to solo teaching
  • Reflective inquiry based on real-world challenges

What Schools Gain

This is capacity-building, not just filling temporary needs. Schools that host interns benefit from:

  • Educators trained in IB and Cambridge lesson planning, classroom management, and assessment
  • Practitioners who return with ready-to-use teaching resources
  • Potential future hires already aligned to international standards
  • Stronger long-term ties with SIS schools and systems

The Intern Journey

Modelled after high-impact clinical teaching programmes such as Stanford STEP and the Melbourne Clinical Teaching Pathway, the SIS Internship follows a structured, scaffolded, and assessed approach:

  • Week 1: Orientation & IB Philosophy
  • Week 2: Co-teaching & Assessment
  • Week 3: Independent Teaching & Peer Feedback
  • Weeks 4–7: Curriculum Design & Professional Inquiry
  • Final: Portfolio Presentation & Mentor Debrief

Mentorship That Matters

Every intern is paired with an SIS mentor trained in the “See, Reflect, Grow” framework, which includes:

  • Active co-planning and classroom observation
  • Weekly evidence-based feedback
  • Gradual release of teaching responsibility

Mentors receive both an honorarium and formal recognition for their role in shaping the next generation of educators.

Designed for Impact

Interns graduate from the programme with more than just logged hours. They leave with:

  • A complete IB-aligned unit and lesson plan framework
  • A reflective teaching portfolio
  • A micro-presentation on a real classroom challenge
  • Practical insights on aligning national and international curriculum frameworks

Through the SIS x YPKBI partnership, we are building an educational ecosystem that empowers schools, inspires educators, and transforms student learning across Indonesia.
